The Modern Doula…
Is an experienced ‘trained professional’, who offers emotional and practical support to families, before, during and after childbirth.  In the past extended families would have supported a new mother but modern day life styles make this difficult, due to location, economic and work commitments.  With the rise in older Mothers and a higher percentage of women electing to have Caesarean births, further help may be needed once a partner’s paternity leave has expired, especially if there are other siblings in the house.  A Doula helps at this time by providing that extra pair of hands, there to give a Mother practical support, confidence and a good start to carry on after they depart.

Birth Doulas…
give constant and calm support throughout the labour and birth.  They are not midwives but birth companions there to offer support not only to the Mothers but Fathers as well.

Post~Birth Doulas…
assist and support the new Mother and her family, after the birth, in their own home.  Helping with sleeping and feeding patterns, [whether breast or bottle feeding] light housework and other daily chores.
The first art of being a parent consists of sleeping when the Baby isn’t looking...                                                                                                                                                                                                  [Author Unknown]
